In 1775, near the area where Lexington now resides, a settlement was built that paved the way for more people to settle in McConnell Springs. This area is the original birthplace of Lexington. In 1792 Kentucky was released from Virginia, assuming its statehood, and later on, in 1834, the first city school in the area of Lexington was built!
While hemp started as the primary crop for that area, it was replaced with tobacco in the 1890s – by the early 1900s, it became the world’s largest barley tobacco market. In 1936 the ever-famous Keeneland Race Course was opened, while planes began to be used in the nearby Airport in 1942.
The area of Lexington is wonderfully full of history, but it remains a fun place to visit and live today. If you love animals, you could partake in the Private Picnic with Goats.
